Melrose back lights graphic images and nomenclature with two technologies. 1) light guides, and 2) fibre optic bundles. These technologies provide even illumination and minimize hot spots.
Light guides
Light guides are implemented in membrane switches by sending lighting from side fire LED’s horizontally through a clear 5 mil film. Light is directed vertically at the points of illumination by creating a refraction pattern in film’s light path. This light guide film creates even illumination while maintaining the 25 to 35 mil profile of a membrane switch.
Melrose manufactures thin 35 mil 7 segment displays using light guide film technology.
Bundles of fiber optic tubes
Bundles of fiber optic tubes are used when brighter illumination is required. An LED’s energy can be concentrated in a few areas more efficiently than with a light guide film with this approach.
